Understanding Water Damage and the Restoration Process
The country has experienced some storms in the past few months. There are some states where reports of whole houses being submerged in storm waters are the order of the day. If you are a homeowner in one of these places, you might be having a hard time coming to terms with the flooded home and the extent of water in the home or water in a business. However, it is possible to restore your home to the state it was in before the water in the home. All you will need to do is call in qualified water damage restoration experts. Below are some tips and mitigation guidelines that will be of great help.
Evacuating The Home
Experts say that as soon as the water damage or flooded home occurs, your priority should be getting everyone out of the water in the home or water in business to a safe place. At this point, activities such as attempting to salvage equipment or furniture become unimportant. When you are sure that everyone is safe, you can contact emergency services. The same procedure should be followed in case of a pipe break or supply line break leading to water in the home.
Calling in water damage restoration and mitigation experts
The next step should be looking for water damage restoration experts close to you. The benefit of getting a service close to you is that they will respond within minutes or hours of the first emergency contact. Note that water damage, water in the business or a flooded home is a problem that cannot be ignored because when the water is left stagnant in a place, it gets contaminated and becomes category two or three, which creates hazards. The sooner the mitigation starts, the better.
The process followed by flood damage restoration experts
The first thing that the experts do when they arrive at the scene of water in the business, is assessing the amount of flood damage and establish whether it is possible to get into the house. The process involves switching off power at the main switch and testing the firmness of the floor and the walls. They will then try and see if there is a pipe break or supply line break and turn the water off. They will then enter the flooded home and find out the places where most of the water has stagnated. The restoration company then comes up with a plan to do the water cleanup. All the water in the home will be extracted.
After the water cleanup is completed, they will assess the walls, floors, and upholstery for flood damage. A plumber will be called in to repair any pipe break or supply line break which could have happened. The furniture may be taken out of the house for cleaning and drying. There are also special agents that are used to assist in drying the walls and other hidden corners. Note that when drying is not done properly, it could lead to the buildup of mold, which will create serious structural problems. After the water cleanup, drying, and deodorization, the restoration company will start the mitigation repairs to the parts that got ruined by the water. These repairs include repainting the walls where the paint has come off, replacing wooden components that may have started to rot and several other modifications. The ultimate goal of the company is to ensure that the flooded house or other building has gone back to the state it was in before any of the damage took place.
It is important to make sure that the entire water cleanup, drying, and flood damage restoration process is done by a professional restoration company. They are the ones to know whether they should call in experts for pipe break and supply line break repairs. Calling them reduces the chances of shoddy work by the restoration company, which could compromise the structural strength of your home or business in the long run.

Main Water Shut Off
9/24/2021 (Permalink)
Yikes! Water is gushing from an internal water source in your home. Do you know where your main water shutoff valve is located?
It is important to be aware of where the main water shut off is in case of an emergency. When water is entering your home and at a fast rate, you will want to react quickly to get your water turned off.
Water shutoff valves may have a round wheel handle or levers. In the basement, the shutoff valve is typically located near the front foundation wall. The water main may have come through the concrete floor or through the wall. The valve is typically located within 3 to 5 feet of where the water main enters the home.
Once you have shut off the water to your home, call SERVPRO of South Chesterfield/Wildwood for your free estimate. They will help to assess the damage and let you know what are the next steps to dry out your home.

Detection Equipment
7/23/2021 (Permalink)
Detection Equipment
When water damage occurs in your home, it’s not always easy to determine where exactly the water has migrated to. To the naked eye, surfaces will appear dry but it can still be wet underneath the flooring or behind the drywall. SERVPRO of South Chesterfield/Wildwood will use detection equipment to help determine if you still have moisture and what next steps should be.
Detection Equipment Scoping involves locating the areas of the structure affected by water and defining the extent to which the structure and contents have absorbed moisture. Moisture detection devices are also used to verify that an environment has been dried thoroughly.
- Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls.
- Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate moisture readings that enable the SERVPRO® Franchise Professional to monitor the drying process.
- Thermohydrometers measure both temperature and relative humidity. Capturing these two readings, a SERVPRO® Franchise Professional using a psychrometric chart can calculate specific humidity, dew point and vapor pressure.
If you’ve had water damage and need help determining where it has migrated to, call SERVPRO of South Chesterfield/Wildwood at 636-537-5400.
Difficult Drying Areas
5/10/2021 (Permalink)
All homes and properties have unique challenges when it comes to extracting water and drying. These 4 spaces are the most common and here's why.
- DUCTWORK - Some duct systems made of fragile, porous materials
- ATTICS - Hard to get equipment into, electrical hazards and may require moving insulation
- BASEMENTS - Could be unfinished with lots of porous materials that would need disposing of in Category 2 or 3 water
- CRAWL SPACE - Hard to get equipment into and low temperatures require supplemental heat to warm the space
SERVPRO professionals will determine the best plan of action and what is needed to properly dry out these hard-to-reach areas. Call SERVPRO of South Chesterfield/Wildwood at 636-537-5400 to receive a free estimate on any of your water damage needs.
Replacing Insulation
4/9/2021 (Permalink)
Whenever water damage occurs in our homes, our first instinct is to save valuable items and start cleaning up the mess. What a lot of people don’t realize is the damage that has occurred that you are unable to see. If you’re unsure about how much damage occurred, give SERVPRO a call. We’ll be able to survey the extent of the water damage and inspect the premises. A SERVPRO professional will inspect and test your home to discover the extent of the damage. Additionally, they will look for safety concerns and explain them to you. An area people don’t think about is the insulation behind your walls. When wet, some insulation, like fiberglass or expanded foam can be dried and saved. Blown insulation that’s wet loses its R-value, or ability to insulate, and should be replaced. SERVPRO will be able to help determine the best route for you to go.

Water Damage Caused by Frozen Pipes
1/16/2021 (Permalink)
How to Prevent Water Damage Caused by Frozen Pipes
This is the time of year for problems to arise from frozen pipes. We’ve been very fortunate to have so many days above freezing this winter season; however, as most St. Louisans know, that can change very quickly. It’s not too late to prepare your home for the cold weather. According to the American Red Cross, here are some helpful tips to protect your pipes from the cold weather.
- Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
- When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
- Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
- If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
If your pipes have ALREADY frozen over…
- Locate the water main shut-off valve.
- Open the faucet so thawing water can flow freely and relieve pressure.
- Warm the pipes with a space heater or hairdryer.
If you find your leaks are causing water damage, give us a call right away!

Check your Washing Machine Hoses Frequently
7/6/2020 (Permalink)
Stainless Steel Washing Machine Hose
What would you guess is the number one cause of water damage to a home? Did you think tornadoes, rainstorms or hurricanes? It’s hard to believe, but it’s broken washing machine hoses.
Left unnoticed a broken washing machine hose can quickly flood a home. Check your hoses periodically. If there are any signs of bulging or leakage, replace the hoses. Make sure your washing machine has heavy, reinforced hoses. The better quality hoses are reinforced with braided metal on the outside or inside.
Another option is to turn off the water to the washing machine when it is not in use. It may not be practical if your laundry has typical plumbing valves, but it’s straightforward if you install a special valve that allows you to turn off hot and cold with a flip of a lever.
A ruptured washing machine hose is the most frequent cause of household water damage originating in the laundry room. According to a spokesman for a major homeowner’s insurance company, a broken cold or hot washing machine hose can inundate the home with up to 500 gallons of water per hour. Imagine bringing an outdoor garden hose inside the house, turning it on full force and just letting it run. You get the picture.
If you are going out of town, turn off your water supply to prevent water damage while you are not at home. SERVPRO is here to help if you should ever need us.

How to Flush Your Water Heater
2/11/2020 (Permalink)
Flushing a water heater in a Chesterfield, MO home
If you are working in your basement in Chesterfield, MO and you notice that your water heater is making screeching or crackling sounds, you may worry that you have to replace your heater. There are some situations where that is the case, but fortunately there are many other times when you just need to give your heater a little extra care. Routine maintenance is important to keep potential problems at bay.
Flushing Your Water Heater
One of the easiest ways to keep your heater working properly is to perform a water heater flush once a year. You will need a garden hose, a regular screwdriver and a drainage area to capture the water. Following a few easy steps will help to prevent any sediment from building up inside the heater and will keep it running smoothly.
Turn off the Heater – For gas heaters, make sure the pilot light is off. Electric heaters need to be turned off at the circuit breaker.
Attach Hose – The garden hose must be connected to the drain valve. The other end of the hose should be placed in an area that can capture water and sediment. Wearing gloves is a smart idea.
Drain the Water Tank – The drain valve must be opened to allow the water to flow out. Allow several minutes to ensure the tank is empty. To help the water drain more quickly, it’s a smart idea to turn on a hot water faucet somewhere else in the house. Then turn off the valve on the water supply.
Close the Valves – After you are sure that the water and sediment have been drained, close the valves. You can then turn on the water supply.
Restore Power and Turn on Heating Element – When you are satisfied that the tank is full, turn the power back on. Then turn the heating element on.
Performing a flush of your water heater every year should keep it running well for many years.

Water in Your Ceiling Lights Can Be a Serious Matter

One thing you never want to see in your home in Wildwood, MO, is dripping water in light on your ceiling
One thing you never want to see in your home in Wildwood, MO, is dripping water in light on your ceiling. Almost everybody knows that water is a conductor of electricity, which could create a dangerous situation for your family. What should you do if this happens?
No Touching
Once you notice water pooling or dripping from a light fixture, avoid the temptation to shut off the light switch. Water and electricity is a dangerous combination, so be sure not to touch anything so that you don't give yourself an electric shock. Instead, your next steps should be:
- Find your breaker box and shut off the electricity.
- Test a different switch to confirm that it's off.
- Locate the main water line and turn the shut-off valve.
Fix the Leak
Before you think about replacing your fixture, you'll want to find and repair the source of the leaking water so that you don't ruin another light. In order to ensure a thorough inspection, you're better off calling a water damage remediation company than doing it yourself. That way the leak itself and all resulting ceiling damage is taken care of in one go. It should also be done quickly, so you don't have to go too long without electricity.
Replace the Fixture
In addition to their expertise in all things electric and wiring, you should contact an electrician to install a new light fixture so that you can be sure it is indeed safe to do so. You may even consider asking for waterproofed wiring, to help mitigate any future water in light disasters. Who knows, this might even be a good opportunity to try out a new style, or replace all your other fixtures, as well.
The most important thing to remember when you find water in light, is to not do much of anything on your own. It's all about bringing in the experts to handle it for you. Remember, it's for your own safety!
Clogs Could Indicate a Sewer Problem
8/27/2019 (Permalink)
Tree roots growing in the sewer line is a common reason for sewer backup problems
Your home in Clarkson Valley, MO has many intricate systems working behind the scenes. As you go about your daily activities, you expect your home’s inner workings to work smoothly. When subtle or not so subtle signs start appearing, like repeatedly clogged toilets, it could mean more than just a simple clog. Sewage cleaning by a professional can get your home back into shape.
Signs of Trouble
Toilet overflow or backup may be the most obvious sing of an issues, but there are other symptoms of a potential sewer issue that should not be overlooked.
- Strange sounds coming from toilet or other appliance when flushing
- Noticeable increase in the water bill
- Sinks and toils drain slowly even when not clogged
- Clogs in multiple locations
- Areas of greener grass in the yard near sewer line
- Patches of grass that are inexplicably greener than the rest of your yard
- Foul odors in the basement or yard
- Unpleasant smells in your yard or basement
The Main Culprits
When the signs above are present, you likely need something more than your trusted plumber to fix the problem. Sewage cleaning can help get to the root of the problem, which is typically caused by three main culprits.
Clogged Pipe or Line: Everything you flush and rinse heads to one location. From hair to grease to flushing items that shouldn’t be, they can make their way to the main line and build up.
Tree Roots: These oxygen producers can give a home needed curbside appeal. Below ground, their roots are always growing toward water sources, which can include growing into pipes and creating holes or blocking flow.
Broken or Collapsed Sewer Lines: Newer developments typically have the latest piping that is resistant to breakage. Homes in older areas could have systems with cast iron or clay, both of which can eventually deteriorate.
Instead of waiting for costly repairs to be needed, sewage cleaning is a preventive way to keep your pipes running smoothly. As part of regular home maintenance, it can also help locate problem areas before they burst.
Causes of Refrigerator Leaks

Causes of Refrigerator Leaks
Maybe your water alarm alerted you, maybe you see a puddle or some dripping, or maybe you see some signs of water damage (corrosion, water stains, etc.). Once you’ve discovered a leak, consider the possible causes.
Blocked defroster. A blocked defroster can stop defrost-cycle water from draining properly. Try clearing out the small drain by pouring hot water into it. Remove any debris with a pipe cleaner.
Drain pan. Sometimes the drain pan itself can leak. Check for cracks.
Filter. Refrigerators with filters can leak if the filter is the wrong size or not installed properly.
Waterline. This is potentially the most problematic. Refrigerators with ice makers or water dispensers have water lines running between the main water supply and the back of the fridge. Feel to see if the water line is wet or dripping. Cracked hoses and loose connections are often the culprits.
Refrigerator leaks can damage the flooring and cabinets in your kitchen. If you experience a refrigerator leak, please contact us right away to treat and help to prevent any further damage.
What Not To Do When Your Home Floods
7/28/2019 (Permalink)
One broken pipe can cause a lot of problems. When you see the telltale signs of water damage in your home in Chesterfield, MO there are specific steps you should take to start the remediation process. There are also a number of things that are important to avoid.
Don't Ignore Safety Precautions
When you approach standing water in home, there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. Avoid potential dangers:
Using electrical appliances in the area
Murky water
Structural Damage
The best course of action is to avoid the area altogether until help arrives. If you must enter the area, however, make sure you wear protective gear and flip the breakers to turn off electricity first.
Don't Cause More Damage
A broken pipe will spew water until it no longer has a source. Neglecting to turn off the water main in a timely manner can cause more damage. Newspaper is absorbent, but it can stain your carpet, creating one more mess to clean up. The same thing goes for brightly colored rugs. Take them out of the space as soon as possible so that they don't bleed onto the floor underneath.
Don't Try To Fix It Yourself
Although your gut reaction to a problem in your home may be to jump in and fix it, resist the urge to do so. Water restoration professionals have the training to fix the flooding problem and restore your home to its former state. They also have the appropriate licensing to ensure that they are following all the right regulations. If you try to address the issue without these credentials, your insurance is unlikely to cover the extra damage you cause in the process.
When a broken pipe causes damage in your home, your timely response is important. Just make sure you are responding in the right way. Enlist professional help and adhere to safety guidelines to ensure prompt and efficient resolution.
Maintaining Your Washing Machine
7/23/2019 (Permalink)
Your clothes washer offers your household loads of support, so periodically take the time to return the favor. Washing machine maintenance can help you avoid breakdowns that could put the appliance out of commission—or worse, lead to leaks and costly water damage.
- Replace the water hoses. Check hoses regularly for bulging, cracking, fraying, and leaks around the ends. Replace the hose if a problem is found or every three to five years as part of a proactive maintenance program.
- Move the machine. Check that there are at least four inches between your washing machine and the wall. This prevents hoses from kinking.
- Keep the machine level. A washing machine that's off-kilter can vibrate, rock, or "walk" across the floor during the spin cycle, which can damage the floor or the machine. Balance the washer by turning the legs clockwise to lower it, and counterclockwise to raise it.
- Clean the lint filter. Depending on your machine, the lint collector may be located in the agitator tube, which is the center column of most machines, or near the top of the washtub. Keep it clean to help your washer run efficiently.
- Wash the washing machine. Rinse away soap residue and buildup by running store-bought washing machine cleaner, or a solution of hot water, vinegar, and baking soda through an empty load.
- Prevent musty odors and mildew. Leave the washer lid or door open between loads to dry out the unit and keep it smelling fresh. On front-loading washers wipe down the rubber seal around the door after doing your laundry.
- Measure your detergent. Read the appliance instruction manual to make sure you use the correct type and amount of detergent for your machine. Too much soap can leave residue on your clothes and cause excess wear and tear on your washer, and high-efficiency washers require a special, low-sudsing detergent.
- Don't overload the machine. Use the appropriate amount of water for the size of the load. Wash heavy or bulky items in small loads since these are harder on the appliance.
- Add a drip pan underneath your washing machine. This is an important addition to an upstairs laundry room since water leaks could damage the floors below it.

Steps for Filing a Water Damage Claim
7/23/2019 (Permalink)
When your home in Chesterfield, MO has sudden water damage, it may seem like there is not a lot you can do to overcome it. The truth is, however, that there are several steps that you can take. Being proactive can not only help to minimize the extent of the damage but also give you all the information you need to file a successful insurance claim.
1. Consult Insurance
Your insurance agent should be your first call after a flood. The sooner you can report a problem, the faster an adjuster can come to your home and survey the damage. While you are waiting on the adjuster to arrive, it's a good idea to peruse your policy to re-familiarize yourself with its terms. List any questions you can think of to ask the adjuster or your agent.
2. Call Plumber
After you hang up the phone with the insurance company, it's time to deal with the damage. Call a licensed plumber and water cleanup experts. They often arrive within hours of your call to assess the damage and provide an estimate that is helpful with your insurance claim. They can also give you a list of things to do to stop more damage from happening, such as turning off the water main, cutting electricity to the affected area and removing standing water safely.
3. Document Damage
Before you remove any water, however, document the damage the pipe burst has caused. Take videos or pictures of the walls, floors and ceilings the water has touched. Having proof of the initial damage can help with your claim even if the adjuster arrives after repairs are already underway.
Even if you don't have the expertise needed to fix water damage, you still have plenty to do when your home is flooded. Calling the appropriate professionals and documenting the damage in a timely manner can be instrumental in getting your insurance claim accepted.
Do You Understand Your Water Damage Insurance Coverage?

Worn down rain gutter
Do You Understand Your Water Damage Insurance Coverage?
There's a lot of confusion concerning whether insurance policies cover flood and water damage. Some homeowners' insurance coverage seems to cover much more than their neighbors. The truth is a little bit complicated but basically comes down to the wording of the policy and any exclusions. What are some of the words and phrases that could help clarify the situation?
- Gradual damage
- Resulting damage
- Subsequent damage
Negligence
There are two other phrases you should pay close attention to (although they don't affect whether your damage is covered); these are "actual replacement cost" and "cash value." These terms refer to how much money you might get for your damaged belongings.
Gradual Damage
This type of damage is generally not covered by insurance. If wear and tear have worn down your rain gutters, and water has been running down the side of your home, leaving stains down your siding, this damage may not be covered.
Resulting Damage
Before you fix broken pipe damage, take note of the immediate changes. If this initial damage is covered under your policy, the remaining flood damage may also be covered. However, the costs associated with replacing old piping and equipment with new probably won't be covered.
Subsequent Damage
If a pipe bursts, your insurance coverage may provide you reimbursement for damage to the carpet, paint, drywall, and similar materials. If you hire water damage remediation professionals to clean up and restore your home, the costs associated with that work may also be covered.
Negligence
If the insurance agency can show that the water damage occurred because of the lack of maintenance, the company may deny the claim. The damage from a broken pipe is immediate, but if a homeowner doesn't report the burst pipe for a couple of days, the company may cite negligence.
You can avoid a denied policy by making sure you understand the exact terms of your policy. Review your responsibilities with your insurance agent and make sure you are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance on your Chesterfield, MO, home. Learn before you experience a flood what is covered and what is not.
Replace Rubber Washing Machine Hoses
9/6/2018 (Permalink)
Washer Machine Hoses

Sump Pump Maintenance Checklist
SUMP PUMP SPRING MAINTENANCE TIPS
Is your basement dry? You might want to thank your sump pump.
Your sump pump works hard to keep your basement and the possessions it holds dry all year long. It detects when rainwater and snowmelt are rising and pumps it out before it rises above the floor level.
However, in order for your sump pump to function at its best, it’s important to check up on it yearly. Make it a habit to check your sump pump every spring to make sure it’s working, that way your risk of a surprise puddle in your basement stays low. Cross these four simple tasks off your spring cleaning to-do list and enjoy the year while staying flood-free.
Open it Up: Take the cover off of the sump pump pit or basin and have a look inside. Clear any debris, mud or rocks that you find inside – this helps prevent it from clogging.
Components Check: Peek and make sure the drain hose is connected, and that it’s not blocked or frozen. Also, check the inlet screen and clear it of any debris.
Keep it Afloat: Make sure the float component can move freely and isn’t blocked.
Flow Strategically: Go outside and make sure the water being pumped out is directed away from your home.
Do a Test Run: Fill the pit with a bucket of water, which should trigger the sump pump to be activated. If it doesn’t, make sure it’s plugged in.
Call a Pro: If the pump doesn’t turn on after you’ve plugged it in, call a pro to repair it.
It is always wise to check with your insurance agent to make sure you have Sump Pump Coverage.

Raw sewage and flood waters contain bacteria, fecal matter, viruses, and parasites that can cause illness. To protect your family's health, you'll want to remove any contaminated items and clean the affected area as soon as the water recedes. MSD's Building Backup Brochure and Clean Up Guide will show you how to get started. But be careful! Thawing a frozen water pipe quickly is important. However, it is just as important to thaw the frozen pipe correctly. Here are seven tips to follow to help you get the water flowing and to help you avoid a burst pipe and potentially damaging flood at your property.
Tip 1: Locate the Frozen Pipe
In order to thaw a frozen pipe, you must first determine which pipe or pipes are frozen. Turn on the faucets in your property.
If no water comes out, or only a slight trickle escapes, then a pipe leading to the faucet is likely frozen. If one pipe is frozen, there is a chance others have frozen also.
If the pipes are exposed, such as pipes under sinks, in basements or along the exterior of the house, you may be able to see the frozen portion of the pipe. Frozen pipes often have frost on them or may have a slight bulge. If the blockage is located in part of the pipe that you have access to, you will have more options for easily thawing the pipe than if the frozen portion is enclosed behind a wall.
Tip 2: Open the Faucet
Before you begin attempting to thaw a frozen pipe, you will want to open the faucet that the pipe feeds water into. Make sure to open both the hot and cold handles. This will help to relieve pressure in the system and will allow the water to escape once you begin to thaw the pipe.
Tip 3: Where to Begin the Thawing Process
You should always begin the thawing process near the faucet then work your way down to the blockage.
This will help ensure that the melting ice and steam is able to escape through the open faucet. If you start the thawing process closer to the blockage, the melting ice could get stuck behind the blockage, creating more pressure in the pipe and increasing the chances the pipe will burst.
Tip 4: Thawing Exposed Pipes
If the frozen pipe is located in an area you can easily access, you have several options for attempting to thaw the pipe.
You should continue to apply the heat until the water escaping from the faucet returns to full strength. Here are four options for thawing an exposed pipe.
Hair Dryer- One of the easiest ways to thaw a pipe is by using a hair dryer. Simply turn the dryer on and point the heat at the pipe, beginning with the portion closest to the faucet. As with any electrical product, take the proper precautions and avoid coming into contact with water when operating the device.
Heat Lamp or Portable Space Heater- Another method to thaw the pipe is to use a heat lamp or portable space heater. Position the device so that the heat is able to reach the frozen pipe. This indirect heat can help to quickly thaw a pipe. Again, make sure to comply with the safety measures and precautions on the device you are using and keep the device away from water..
Hot Towels- Another way to thaw a frozen pipe is to wrap towels that have been dipped in hot water around the pipe. This can help to slowly thaw the blockage.
Electrical Heating Tape- A final option is to apply electrical heating tape directly to the pipe. This tape distributes heat throughout the pipe. You can purchase electrical heating tape that you plug in and unplug as needed or you can purchase heating tape that shuts off on its own.
Tip 5: Thawing Enclosed Pipes
If the frozen pipe is located in an area that you cannot easily access, you have three options for thawing the pipe.
Turn the Heat Up in the Property- You can attempt to thaw the frozen pipe by increasing the temperature in the property. Turning the thermostat up may be all that is needed to allow the ice blockage to melt.
Infrared Lamp- If you know where in the wall the frozen pipe is located, you can attempt to thaw the blockage by placing an infrared lamp in front of the portion of the wall where the pipe is located. The heat from the lamp may be able to penetrate the wall and allow the pipe to defrost.
Cut Out a Section of the Wall- If you are comfortable doing so, you can cut out the section of the drywall in front of the frozen pipe so that you can easily access the pipe. You can then use one of the methods for thawing out an enclosed pipe listed above.
Tip 6: Things to Avoid
Never attempt to thaw a pipe using an open flame, such as a propane torch. This can not only damage the pipe, it can also start a fire in your property.
Tip 7: If the Pipe Bursts
If a frozen water pipe does burst, the first thing you should do is shut off the main water line into your property. This will prevent additional water from flowing and damaging your property. You should know where the shut-off valves are for each of your properties and for each unit. There are usually smaller shut-off valves located near sinks and toilets, but the main shut-off valve is often located near the water meter.
Call a Professional
Call a Professional- If you are unable to thaw the pipe, unable to locate the frozen pipe, do not feel comfortable thawing a pipe yourself or if a pipe bursts, you should call a plumber or other professional. They will be able to remedy the problem for you.
Risks of Thawing a Frozen Pipe
There are two main risks you should be aware of when attempting to thaw a frozen water pipe.
Fire- When using any heat source to thaw the frozen pipe, you can run the risk of starting a fire. Make sure to follow all safety instructions and never leave the product unattended.
Burst Pipe- If you do not begin the thawing process correctly, you could cause the pipe to burst. Always start thawing closest to the faucet.
Understanding Water Damage and the Restoration Process

A professional restoration company helps with the mitigation of these troublesome issues. They will come to your rescue whether you experience a pipe break, back up, or supply line break. What do you do about the water cleanup or drying before they arrive to help with the restoration? Here are 6 Tips to Drying Out Water Damage for your next flooded home or water in your business nightmare.
Speed is Everything
The water in the home that has accumulated can become more severe the longer the water sits. Water works quickly and soaks deep into the building components of your home compromising their structure. Once water cleanup has occurred, areas that remain damp are at risk of molding if not properly dried. Mold can begin to develop as rapidly as 48 to 72 hours from the water removal so acting fast towards mitigation is wise.
Connecting with a professional and prompt follow through with your insurance coverage can not only save your home from flood damage that occurs beyond your policies coverage, it may save you money. Especially true if your business experiences a supply line break or pipe break.
Mind the Mold
Any type of mold developing in the home is worrisome and for those who’ve recently experienced flood damage, you’re certain to have concerns.
Mold loves moisture. Combine it with the organic materials used to construct your home--wood, insulation, drywall, carpet, and particleboard, are all susceptible to water damage that can become a breeding ground for mold if mitigation is not pursued quickly.
Mitigation of mold begins by drying the area. Opening windows and placing fans in the house to keep the air circulating can be a great approach. Keep in mind that weather conditions in your local area can impact the effectiveness. Working with a restoration company or other hired professional team is a great choice that will ensure the spreading of the mold is managed.
Take an Assessment
There are a number of ways water damage can occur in the home. A pipe break, supply line break, rainwater, or sewage backup are just a few types of water that can be absorbed into the home. This doesn’t just mean walls and carpets, however--water can seep into furniture, clothing, toys, and many other household goods.
In order to assess the flood damage and the best treatment, a restoration company or other hired professional will want to know the type of leak. From there, they can assist in discovering which items may be salvaged and which must be discarded. Those that can be saved will be dried thoroughly and treated to ensure no residual moisture remains.
Find the Saturation
A number one danger that lurks around every water damage situation is hidden saturation. The water we can see is easy to cleanup, but, underneath the surface layers, liquid pools and leeches. Making a flooded home a perfect place for bacteria, fungi, or any other variety of damaging pests to flourish. If they fully take hold, the wood needs to be discarded immediately.
Professional water restoration companies can pinpoint damaged drywall or wet insulation. They can help with materials that can be saved or need to be destroyed. It’s important that all water is discovered, cleaned, and dried before restoration begins and professionals are great at finding these hidden dangers.
Clean Up Time
The majority of water in the home or water in the business is caused by backed up sewage. This can be the source of many a harmful bacteria, debris, or other tainted materials. A shop-vac or HEPA-filter vacuum is perfect at removing any allergens, mold spores, and asthma-inducing dust. Household cleaners and disinfectants do a terrific job at the mitigation of mold spores and bacteria but they don’t always penetrate as deep as a professional.
Water restoration professionals can assist with heavy duty industrial cleaners to ensure the nasty, intruding bacteria doesn’t spread. This makes choosing a professional restoration company to tackle water cleanup an ideal decision.
Dry It Out
One of the most important things you can do with any water cleanup project comes at the very end. In order for the restoration of your flooded home, pipe break, or supply line break to go smoothly, the entire area needs to be completely finished drying. As long as water exists in an area, it will leech into the wood and spread. Water damage can truly take hold of your recently flooded home and cause a disaster for years.
Taking the step to prevent dry rot or structural damage due to water in the home or water in the business can be the difference of hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars. A professional water restoration company can come in and help with the drying. They will also confirm that the area needing to be restored is properly dried before they begin.
A professional water restoration company can help with the mitigation of a variety of flood damage. They can assist with drying, cleanup, and mold control in addition to their extensive restoration capabilities. DIY projects are great on paper, but the reality is that you don’t want to leave this problem to chance. Professionals can get right to the root of the problem caused by water in the home or water in the business.

BASEMENT FLOODING SERVPRO ADVISES

Quickly Removing Unwanted Water
SERVPRO advises checking sump pump test before rain.
ST. LOUIS – The relentless rain is causing problems for some homeowners this week. Cleanup and restoration service SERVPRO'S have already started seeing a slight increase in flooded basements, and it's expecting a large influx of calls over the next few days.
Rick Bilbrey says most calls are about flooding from failed sump pumps and sewage backups. Homeowners often don't know a sump pump is broken until it doesn't work in wet conditions. And sewage backups occur when the pipes get flooded.
In the case of a failed sump pump, Bilbrey says to call a service immediately to remove the water and replace the pump. But if a sewage backup is causing the flooding, sometimes it's best to wait to call.
"You're just going to have to wait until it stops raining. Because I don't want you to waste your money on trying to suck up water that's just going to come back," said Bilbrey.
Bilbrey says what you can do, is use a wet/dry vac or towels to soak up the water until you get a service to help you. If it is a sewage backup, you should also get the drain cleared before you get your basement cleaned. Bilbrey says most importantly, you should check your sump pump now, ahead of more rain in the forecast, to make sure it's working.
